Hawthorn and Brooks did not have their BRMs available for the race. So, Hawthorn was free and was entered with #38 Maserati, but after a certain misunderstanding regarding a contract with Ferrari, Hawthorn did not participate in the race, withdrawing after practice. The Ferrari reserved for him was that of Paul Frère.
