Hawthorn and Brooks did not have their BRMs available for the race. So, Hawthorn was free and was entered with #38 Maserati, but after a certain misunderstanding regarding a contract with Ferrari, Hawthorn did not participate in the race, withdrawing after practice. The Ferrari reserved for him was that of Paul Frère. Godia would participate with his new Maserati #2524, which broke down during practice, so he rented the factory team’s spare car #2507/23 to participate in the race. To avoid the printing of pirated programs, a system was used in which the cars participated in practice using an alternative numbering, and the definitive numbering was done only on the eve of the race. Hawthorn qualified in 13th place but withdrew after practice. |
